Leeds United Women won their fifth straight game in the league Sunday, beating Stockport County Ladies 3-0 behind goals from Alice Hughes, Drew Greene and Ellie White. LUFC caught up with White after the game to hear her thoughts on the victory, which takes Leeds to third in the FA Women’s National League Division One North.
“This was a big three points,” White said. “Everyone is digging for each other, and it was such an all-around performance from the team today.
“I think that every single person, from the 11 that started to the players on the bench, just wanted that win so badly. I think that we have put out a statement out there today.”
Leeds’ first goal Sunday came in just the second minute with Hughes volleying in from a corner, and White says such early strikes have been key to United’s run of form.
“We have done it a few weeks now and it is very nice to get going quickly and to have that momentum, because it lessens the pressure on us the rest of the way so we can settle and play football.”
Leeds’ second goal came in the 35th minute and their third in the 79th, White finishing at the back post from a Darcie Greene cross to seal the three points.
Minutes earlier, the midfielder had nearly scored with a brilliant strike from outside the box, but the curling effort clanged off the crossbar.
“I had not scored in a couple of weeks, so it was nice to get back on the scoresheet,” White said. “But really, with everyone putting in shifts all over the pitch, what is important is getting a result.”
“We want to win every single game now. It was a big three points today and we just want to keep that momentum going and keep putting pressure on the top two teams in the league.”
