Leeds United Women fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Cheadle Town on Sunday afternoon, after Jessica Lightfoot’s second half goal secured the points for the visitors.

The first half got off to a bright start, with Leeds pushing for an opener through Amy Woodruff who latched onto Darcie Greene’s deflected strike and prodded towards goal, forcing a strong stop from Cheadle ‘keeper Sophie Donald.

Cheadle responded with a chance of their own, with Isobel Dean rising highest from a free-kick delivery, but her header was high and wide of the top corner and no danger to Carrie Simpson.

As the clock ticked on, less chances materialised, with both sides attempting to get a foothold in the game but struggling, resulting in quite a cagey affair which fizzled into the half-time break.

Cheadle came out of the blocks quickly as the second half kicked off, forcing Carrie Simpson into a strong save at point-blank range as Rachael Dunlop looked to open the scoring.

Five minutes later though, it was Lightfoot who got the breakthrough for Cheadle, finding the bottom corner from just inside the box to give the visitors the lead.

Leeds responded well though, in search of a leveller. Kath Smith threaded Macy Ellis down the line but her cross was well claimed by the Cheadle ‘keeper.

As the clock neared ninety minutes, the Whites kept pushing and substitute Brittany Sanderson stepped up to a free-kick 30 yards away from goal, but her effort was slightly too much and it narrowly cleared the bar.

Leeds kept searhing deep into stoppage time, but despite the pressure, were unable to find an equalising goal meaning the visitors left with the three points.
