Leeds United recognises how important accessible parking is for many disabled supporters and the role it can play in making matchdays at Elland Road both possible and enjoyable.
Disabled supporters are an important part of the Leeds United community, and the club is committed to listening to feedback and continuing to improve accessibility wherever reasonably possible.
This season has brought significant changes to parking around Elland Road because of the West Stand redevelopment. Almost 1,000 parking spaces have been lost from the start of the season, and parking capacity will remain restricted while the redevelopment works continue.
As part of the arrangements connected with the redevelopment, the club has also taken over the operation of Leeds City Council-owned car parks on matchdays. Parking is now booked in advance using digital tickets, with the aim of giving supporters greater certainty before travelling to the stadium and helping vehicles enter the car parks more efficiently, reducing congestion around the stadium.
For this season, the club is required under its parking arrangements with Leeds City Council to provide 115 free accessible parking spaces. Together with 17 additional disabled parking spaces relocated from Lowfields Road for safety reasons, this means there are currently 132 free accessible spaces, representing approximately 7.1% of the 1,856 spaces currently available.
This figure exceeds current statutory guidelines, and the number of free accessible spaces provided by the club/Leeds City Council is higher than all other Premier League clubs, apart from two clubs who each have a ground capacity of over 60,000.
Once the free accessible spaces have been allocated, registered disabled supporters are still able to purchase spaces from the remaining general parking allocation, subject to availability.
The club has listened carefully to feedback from disabled supporters about the new arrangements. Some supporters have welcomed the certainty provided by advance booking, while others have understandably raised concerns about not being able to secure suitable parking close to the stadium.
Following consultation and dialogue with the club’s Disabled Advisory Group, Supporter Advisory Board and Leeds United Disabled Organisation, a new priority booking period will be introduced for registered disabled supporters to secure matchday parking.
Beginning with the Tottenham Hotspur fixture on Saturday 7 November, matchday parking sales will initially open exclusively to supporters registered with the club as disabled. This priority booking window applies to those who hold a valid season ticket or match ticket and operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
The priority window will open one day before parking goes on sale to Season Ticket Holders and Members with a valid match ticket. While parking spaces cannot be guaranteed, the club anticipates that all registered disabled supporters who wish to book during this priority period should normally be able to secure a space.
The purpose of this priority period is to give disabled supporters who need to park close to Elland Road the best possible opportunity to secure a space before the general allocation is released.
The club has also arranged for accessible buses to operate from the Stourton and Temple Green Park & Ride sites on matchdays.
In addition, the club has ensured that the 17 wider accessible spaces in Zone 1 of the Purple Car Park are reserved specifically for wheelchair users, reflecting the particular space and access requirements which some wheelchair users have. Leeds City Council has commissioned the re-lining of this area to support wider parking bays; this will be completed as soon as possible.
The club appreciates no single parking arrangement will meet every supporter’s individual circumstances. Leeds United will therefore continue to work closely with our Disabled Advisory Group, Supporter Advisory Board, Leeds United Disabled Organisation, disabled supporters and Leeds City Council, keeping the operation of the new arrangements under review throughout the season.
Our aim is to make attending Elland Road as accessible as reasonably possible while managing the significant reduction in parking caused by the stadium redevelopment.
In partnership with the White Rose Office Park, the club has also secured 1,200 matchday car parking spaces for every Leeds United home match. For details on our offsite parking and matchday transport arrangements, please visit our dedicated Transport and Travel Page.
