Leeds United trio feature as Wales secure play-off home tie with emphatic win

Leeds United’s Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon and Dan James all played their part as Wales recorded a commanding 7–1 victory over North Macedonia in their final World Cup qualifying Group J fixture at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The result sees Craig Bellamy’s side finish second in the group, confirming home advantage in March’s play-off semi-final, with all three Leeds players contributing across a dominant performance.

Darlow produced a steady display on his 12th appearance for the Red Dragons. The Whites goalkeeper played the full match, making one save, completing 36 accurate passes, and registering 46 touches. He also contributed four recoveries, helping Wales maintain control during long spells of possession.

Joe Rodon continued his excellent form for both club and country with an assured performance across 81 minutes before being replaced by Chris Mepham.

The centre-back completed a match-high 99 passes at a 94% success rate, made five defensive contributions, and enjoyed 113 touches of the ball. Rodon also added four clearances, one interception and seven recoveries, while winning three duels as Wales built from a strong defensive base.

Dan James once again showcased his attacking threat, getting on the scoresheet in the 57th minute with Wales’ fourth goal of the evening. The winger was lively throughout his 64-minute outing before being replaced by Sorba Thomas.

James made 26 touches, completed nine passes, created one chance, made a defensive contribution and won three duels during a performance full of energy and intent.

Needing victory to guarantee second place and a home tie in the play-offs, Wales delivered a performance full of conviction. The home crowd at the Cardiff City Stadium were treated to a clinical attacking display, with Bellamy’s side now looking ahead to March with confidence.
