RUDY SAVOURS AWARD-WINNING STRIKE

Midfielder reflects on his Goal of the Season winner...

Goal of the Season winner Rodolph Austin was honoured receive the accolade for his stunning strike against Watford, saying "any one of the players could have got the award".

The midfielder beat off competition from fellow nominees Giuseppe Bellusci (vs Bournemouth away), Luke Murphy (vs Bournemouth at home), Alex Mowatt (vs Wigan) and Souleymane Doukara (vs Blackpool) to be crowned at the recent End of Season Awards night.

Austin’s effort came back in late February when eventual promotion-winners Watford visited Elland Road, with the Jamaica international firing United into a 2-0 lead with an unstoppable, dipping half-volley from the edge of the area.

Reflecting on his award-winning goal, Austin said: "I saw the keeper off the line and just said, ‘I’m going to hit it and hopefully it will go in’.

"It went in so it was a good goal.

"Of all the goals, any one of the players could have got the award. There were some great goals.

"I just want to thank my team-mates for having me with them, they’re great lads."

At the age of 29, Austin was one of the more experienced heads in United’s side last season, meaning he was able to share his wisdom with the likes of Alex Mowatt, Sam Byram, Charlie Taylor and Lewis Cook, who all played alongside him.

"They are very good young players," he said. "I’m happy to see the club bringing through those players; Cook, Sam and Charlie."

Austin’s award was voted for in huge numbers by the United fans, and the midfielder could not hide his gratitude for the support they have shown him.

"The fans shout my name and it gives me a bit more energy on the pitch," he said.

"I’m very glad I can play for them."
