SCOTT DELIGHTED BY EXTENSION

Defender on signing for an extra year...

Scott Wootton has revealed his delight at signing a one-year contract extension at Elland Road.

The 23-year-old defender has committed his future to the club until summer 2017 after having a year-and-a-half remaining on his previous deal.

Wootton, a summer 2013 signing from Manchester United, has been ever-present in the side since returning from a productive loan period at Rotherham last month, helping Neil Redfearn’s men win five of the last six games to climb into the top half of the Championship.

"I’m very pleased, I’m delighted to have signed a contract extension - everything’s going very well at the minute," he said.

Asked if he anticipated such a turnaround in personal fortunes at Elland Road when he first headed out to the Millers, Wootton replied: "Not really to be honest.

"I was on loan, playing week-in, week-out at Rotherham which I really enjoyed.

"I never expected it to turn around like it has and that is one of the reasons why I’m extra pleased.

"I got a run in the side last season before I picked up an injury at Charlton and I don’t think you can get to your best by playing a couple of games here and there.

"It’s difficult when you’re not getting a run in the side but hopefully I’ll stay there from now until the end of the season.

"I’ve played the last seven games and hopefully that will continue – then you’ll start to see the best of me."

Wootton has played at right back in all seven of United’s last seven games, suffering defeat just once and seeing the side concede only three times.

"We’ve been a bit more solid and harder to beat," he explained. "We’ve kept three clean sheets on the bounce which I think is credit to the whole team, not just the back four.

"I think there’s just a real togetherness and spirit, everyone is just fighting for each other. It’s really good to be a part of."
