KALVIN 'OVER THE MOON' TO SIGN

KALVIN \'OVER THE MOON\' TO SIGN

Young midfielder reflects on putting pen to paper at Elland Road...

An "over the moon" Kalvin Phillips officially penned his new two-year deal at Elland Road on Wednesday morning, and the young midfielder says it was something he had his sights set on throughout the season.

Phillips agreed terms with the club last week to cap a whirlwind couple of months for the Academy graduate, with his senior debut coming away to Wolves back in April and his first senior goal coming the following week at home to Cardiff City.

The 19-year-old only turned professional last summer but is now regarded as a regular part of the first-team squad and one of the club’s brightest young talents.

“I’m over the moon to sign my second professional contract, especially at this club,” he said. “It’s very good - I’m buzzing.

“It’s a great club and I’m a Leeds lad. It was something I was wanting to do throughout the whole season.

“I just kept my head down and I’m buzzing.”

Asked when he first found out he would be offered a new contract, Kalvin said: “I think it was about three weeks ago.

“My agent came to meet Cellino and he said that he liked me and he offered me two years.

“There’s always that little bit of worry if you don’t get your contracts to you straight away but I’m quite a calm person.

“I think with the way that I played last season – in those two games I think I did quite well – I obviously made an impression on Redders and Cellino.”

Kalvin’s debut came in the breathless 4-3 Easter Monday defeat at Molineux, before he made his Elland Road bow and netted the equalising goal in the 2-1 defeat to Cardiff six days later.

Reflecting on his stint in the side, Kalvin said: “I think I did reasonably well.

“The first game was a big shock for me but I think I calmed my nerves for the second game.

“Getting the goal was a real confidence. I can’t wait to get back in and see the plans for next season.”

And Kalvin is now looking to make an impression on new head coach Uwe Rosler when he returns to pre-season training with the rest of the squad in the coming weeks.

“I quite like pre-season,” he said. “I’m one of those people who likes to keep fit all the time but when pre-season comes you just want to play football.

“If I keep fit during the off-season then I’ll be prepared to play proper football when I get back.

“With the new head coach, he doesn’t really know any of the lads properly and I’m going to have to make an impression and see if he likes me.

“It’ll be the first time I’ve been on a pre-season tour so hopefully that goes well.

“After last season – I only made those two appearances – but it’s always in my mind to make more and more and do the best I can. I’ve got a good plan.

“I’m excited. I think he’s made a couple of good signings already and I can’t wait to work with them on the training ground and see how the team progresses and gets better throughout pre-season and next season.”
