U21S REPORT: A SIX-GOAL SEASON FINALE

United youngsters end their season with a 3-3 draw at Barnsley...

Our Under-21s signed off their season with a thrilling 3-3 draw away to Barnsley on Monday afternoon.

The United youngsters had fallen behind to Shaun Tuton’s seventh-minute header, but Frank Mulhern levelled proceedings at Oakwell just 10 minutes later as his ferocious 25-yard strike whistled into the top corner.

The woodwork denied Jordan Jones from restoring the hosts’ lead before Mallik Wilks, the top goalscorer for our Under-18s this term, slotted United ahead after latching onto Mulhern’s cushioned header inside the area on 37 minutes.

Jack McKay then extended United’s advantage on the hour-mark with his second goal in as many matches, finishing calmly beyond Nick Townsend just moments after Jones had again hit the post at the opposite end.

Barnsley soon managed to pull one back, though, Tuton netting his second of the afternoon after being played in by Jones. And with 12 minutes remaining on the clock, Tuton completed the Tykes’ comeback and his hat-trick as he guided Josh Kay’s cross beyond Eric Grimes.

Under-21s team vs Barnsley: Grimes, M Taylor (Downing 83), P McKay, Skelton, Denton, Purver, Vieira, Lyman, Mulhern, Wilks, J McKay. Subs not used: Richardson, Pearce, Oduor.
