PHILLIPS COULD RETAIN MIDFIELD PLACE

PHILLIPS COULD RETAIN MIDFIELD PLACE

Team news ahead of the visit of Cardiff City...

Neil Redfearn says Kalvin Phillips could continue in midfield for Saturday’s visit of Cardiff City after impressing on his United debut.

The Academy product went straight into Redfearn’s starting line-up for the Easter Monday defeat, with both Rodolph Austin and Lewis Cook absent.

Austin will serve the second game of his two-match ban at Elland Road on Saturday, while Cook is expected to remain sidelined due to an ankle ligaments problem.

"I thought Kalvin acquitted himself well," Redfearn said. "He’s a good player and I think once he gets his feet under the table, you’ll see a different side to Kalvin.

"He’s got a good range of passing and he’s got a goal in him. He’s physically blessed, you can see that in two or three tackles he went into on Saturday.

"He’s not fazed and he’s ready. You can see that.

"If looked across the midfield, it was basically Academy players with Murphy sat in there.

"I think, to be fair to Murph, he took that responsibility well. He was there as that experienced player for them and I thought he took that role on well."

Redfearn also says there could be chances for players to follow Phillips’ lead by breaking into the team before the end of the season.

"I’ve got to look at everything," he said. "It’s an opportunity to have a look at all the players and perhaps some players who have been out of the picture.

"But what I don’t want to do is go away too much from what we’ve being doing which is what’s been successful.

"That would be wrong for the players who have got us there. It’s important that we go down the same route."

Defender Giuseppe Bellusci was absent at Molineux, but Redfearn is optimistic of having the Italian centre-back available again following a brief injury lay-off.

"I’m hoping he’ll be available for Saturday," said the head coach. "Perhaps the game on Monday came a little bit too quick as he had a slight calf strain and a hamstring problem.

"If he’s fit then hopefully he can be in contention."

On Steve Morison, who was rested for the trip to Wolves, Redfearn added: "Steve has put a real shift in for us in the past two or three months. I think that lone striker role is a tough gig.

"You’ve got to cover a lot of ground. You’ve got your back to goal and he’s done that for us more often than not in the matches when we’ve been successful.

"I’ve got to look after these players. I can’t just keep hammering them and diluting them.

"To be fair to Mirco as well, he’d earned a recall. I like the fact that he’s getting to grips with what we want.

"He knows now he’s got to fight for his place and do the other stuff. He’s a goalscorer.

"On Monday, I thought his game got better and better and he led the line quite well. He’s done himself no harm."
