Striker reflects on Friday's pre-season friendly draw with Harrogate Town...

Chris Wood was glad to pull on the United shirt for the first time on Friday night and "blow off a couple of cobwebs", saying "fitness is the main thing" during the opening pre-season fixtures.

Wood, who joined on a four-year deal from Leicester earlier this month, started the 1-1 draw at Harrogate Town and completed 45 minutes as Uwe Rosler fielded different sides in each half.

"I’m feeling good," the striker said. "It was nice to be back out playing and to blow off a couple of cobwebs.

"We don’t really look at the results in the first couple of games – it’s all about our preparation and building.

"Our fitness is the main thing coming into these games and looking at how gel as a team and start to get that working.

"We’ve got new players like myself coming in and Lee Erwin, and we’re trying to understand how everybody plays.

"The gaffer asked us to play different formations and it’s all about building and learning from that and then taking it into the games."

The New Zealand international started in attack alongside Mirco Antenucci, with fellow summer signing Lee Erwin playing just behind the two strikers.

And Wood, who came close to finding the target with a powerful strike into the side-netting after a surging run forward, felt that the three showed glimpses of an understanding in their first game together.

“It’s going to take some time for us all to click together but I did feel at times that we worked off the same page,” he said. “It worked really well at times.

“The team looked sharp and looked good. There were a couple of errors but that’s what it’s like in the first game of pre-season.

“It’s what it’s there for. We’re there to get our base work and our fitness done and then push on from there.”

On playing in front of the United support for the first time, Wood added: "For me, there’s not normally that many fans for games like that.

"Credit to them for turning out and showing their support. I’ve heard it’s a great club with great support and Friday night was my first taste of it, which was great."

The striker was speaking at Saturday’s in-store launch of the new home kit by Kappa, and he says that the strip for 2015/16 gets his seal of approval after wearing it for the first time at Harrogate.

"I’m quite fond of it, I like it," he said. "Without a sponsor it looks really nice, it looks classy.

"It’s going back to a traditional way and it’s really nice.

"It was nice to pull on the shirt for the first time and hopefully there’ll be a lot of goals to come with it."
