TAYLOR THRILLED WITH AWARDS DOUBLE

Full-back discusses his pair of Player of the Year awards...

Charlie Taylor has spoken of his delight after scooping a 2015/16 End of Season Awards double.

The 22-year-old full-back was presented with the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Player of the Year award prior to Saturday’s game with Charlton Athletic, before going on to be crowned the club’s Player of the Year after topping the supporters’ annual vote.

“It’s been a good week,” said Taylor, as he prepares for the final game of a season that has seen him feature 42 times in all competitions.

“I picked up the Yorkshire Evening Post award and topped it off with the fans’ Player of the Year award on Saturday night.

“They were two great awards to win. They made it a very good week and I’m really happy.

“I just concentrate on my football, but the awards at the end of the season are a massive bonus.

“You don’t really think about them until they actually happen – then it’s brilliant and you’re absolutely buzzing about it.”

Asked if he felt the awards were deserved, Taylor added: “I don’t know, I can’t really say that. There’s a few players who have had good seasons – Stuey (Dallas) has done well, Cookie has done well, so has Berra and Woody has scored a lot of goals considering the amount of games he’s missed. I could go through everyone.

“We could be on for a top-half finish, which is disappointing in a way, but it hasn’t been a disaster of a season overall.”

United’s campaign draws to a close with Saturday’s lunchtime trip to Preston North End and Taylor has his sights set on entering the summer break in a positive manner by securing three points against the manager who handed him his debut at Elland Road back in 2011.

“Preston have a lot of familiar faces,” said Taylor. “Simon Grayson gave me my debut here and there’s Beckford there and Paul Huntington.

“It’s the last game for a couple of months so we’d love to send the fans home with a win. It sticks in their mind if we win the last game and I hear there’s a big following going over.

“If we can get the win, it would be a really good finish. It would secure us a top-half finish.

“I think it’s hugely important. I know it’s the last game of the season and people say there’s not much to play for, but there is a lot to play for. To finish on a high would be great.”

Speaking about the off-season in the weeks ahead, Taylor added: “The season has gone quick. It’s good to have a break – the Championship is a long, hard season with all of the Saturday and Tuesday games.

“It catches up with you, so it’s good to refuel and get the legs back during a break.

“Then we’ll get ready for pre-season again, where you get put through your paces – that’s a tough couple of months before the start of the season.”
