#LUFCONTOUR: WEEK TWO BEGINS

FREEVIEW: IRELAND TRAINING CAMP 10.7.16

The inside track from United's pre-season training camp in Ireland...

Monday sees United’s pre-season training camp in Ireland enter its second week, and preparations are bound to step up a gear as we approach our first friendly fixtures of the summer.

Games with Shelbourne (Wednesday, 7pm) and Shamrock Rovers (Saturday, 3pm) await Garry Monk’s side, who have added four new faces to the squad that landed in Dublin the Sunday before last.

Hadi Sacko, Rob Green, Matt Grimes and Kemar Roofe have all linked up with their new team-mates - taking United’s tally of summer arrivals to six - and Saturday’s team bonding trip to Courtlough Shooting Grounds in Balbriggan provided the perfect opportunity for the new boys to integrate with the group away from the training pitch.

“I always find it important that we do some activities outside of the football,” Monk explained. “It’s something I’m very big on.

“It was a chance for the lads to have a bit of competition. You see a different side to their character and it’s a good way to get them bonding outside of that football environment.”

Sol Bamba was one of the players leading the way during the early stages, and the defender, who teamed up with Sacko, Toumani Diagouraga, Paul McKay and Souleymane Doukara, revealed to LUTV which of his team-mates had also impressed with their aim.

“Paul McKay did very well,” said Bamba. “But Toums is very bad – he said to keep that quiet but I have to say it!

“The group has done well, though. I think it’s as important as a training session, getting the group together and having a bit of fun after a difficult week.”

Another pre-season tour ice-breaker for the new signings is the traditional initiation song in front of the squad and coaching staff. Some quite fancy the chance to belt out their favourite tune after dinner – often using any available cutlery as a makeshift microphone – but we suspect that Roofe’s Tweet on Saturday evening sums up the thoughts of most when they realise they’re next up.

“What a horrible feeling it is when you hear the ding ding for your initiation song,” the forward posted, before going on to reveal R Kelly’s Ignition Remix as his tune of choice.

Rob Green, meanwhile, gave some of the younger squad members an introduction to Britpop by revisiting a ‘90s classic released before a handful of his new team-mates were even born.

Asked by LUTV which initiation song he went for, the new goalkeeper said: “Girls and Boys by Blur, which, amazingly, I realised that no-one knew because they’re a lot younger than me!

“When I say I sung it, I shouted it – one verse, one chorus and I was out!

“I got my song out of the way – that was good, standing up and singing in front of everyone, and I’ve just been finding my feet in training.

“It’s been great so far. There’s been a lot of positive messages, a lot of positivity from the group and the management. Everyone has made me feel very welcome.

“Regardless of how old you are or how experienced you are, it’s always a little bit daunting come to a new club.”

Training resumed on Sunday morning and the players enjoyed another productive session before gathering in the team hotel later that evening to watch the final of Euro 2016.

The likes of Diagouraga, Bamba, Doukara and Sacko ensured there was plenty of support for the hosts, but it was Portuguese-raised Ronaldo Vieira who was celebrating at the final whistle after Eder’s extra-time strike won it for the underdogs.

The vested interest in both finalists helped to liven up an otherwise largely forgettable game, and LUTV set up a GoPro camera in the corner of the room to film the players’ reactions during the key moments, including young Vieira’s premature celebration when an offside Pepe headed narrowly wide.

The players also gave LUTV their thoughts throughout the game and you’ll be able to see the full feature online later today, along with numerous exclusive interviews and training footage from within the camp..

LUTV is also the only place to hear Leeds United commentary of Wednesday’s friendly with Shelbourne in Dublin. We’re hoping to confirm a special guest co-commentator alongside Thom Kirwin at Tolka Park, so watch this space in the next day or so!
