BYRAM: WE\'RE PLAYING FOR THE FANS

Goalscorer gives his verdict on 3-0 win at Fulham...

Sam Byram says he and his team-mates are playing for the United supporters as they look to end the season as strongly as possible.

Byram, who has overtaken Aidy White as the club’s highest appearance maker in the current squad, opened the scoring in Wednesday night’s 3-0 victory over Fulham to set Neil Redfearn’s side onto their fifth away victory from the last six on the road.

United were backed by another sizeable away following at Craven Cottage, with approximately 3,500 travelling fans cheering them on to victory, and Byram is keen to reward their faith in the remaining eight games of the campaign.

"That’s the main thing we’re playing for now," the 21-year-old said of the United support. "They’re starting to turn up in even more numbers than usual.

"We’ve got a great away support and it’s about showing them what we’re building on for next season."

Byram opened the scoring against the run of play at Craven Cottage, meeting Gaetano Berardi’s left-wing cross with a powerful downward header to take his tally to three for the season.

"I don’t think I was in the game that much up until that point," he said. "It was a great cross from Berardi and I just managed to get the header on target.

"I’m always looking to get on the scoresheet and help the team out.

"We’re a lot more solid as a team now. The fans can see that we’re staying in games.

"I think we’re harder to play against and we’re also creating the chances and putting them away at the same time.

On the win, which saw United extend their unbeaten run to four games and climb into the top half of the table, Byram added: "It’s an important three points for us. It keeps our run going and we’ll take it into Saturday’s game.

"I think the first goal was probably against the run of play. They had a lot of chances and a lot of possession of the ball.

"But I thought we defended well and held our ground going into half-time.

"We came out a lot sharper I think.

"First and foremost, you’ve got to stay in the game. Even if you go 1-0 down, it’s important to stick at it and stay in there so we’re not too far away."
