TOUGH DERBY WIN PLEASES REDFEARN

Head coach reflects on 2-1 Yorkshire derby win...

Neil Redfearn says having players like Billy Sharp available means "you’ve always got a chance" after the striker stepped off the bench to grab a late winner at Huddersfield.

Sam Byram had put United ahead after just seven minutes, latching onto Luke Murphy’s through ball to loft over Town goalkeeper Joe Murphy, only for the hosts to level on 26 minutes through substitute Harry Bunn’s header.

But Sharp, a late replacement for Lewis Cook, stooped at the back post to meet Mirco Antenucci’s cross and secure a dramatic 2-1 win in the final minute at the John Smith’s Stadium.

"It was a tough game, it was always going to be one," said Redfearn.

"Huddersfield were in a good run of form, they’ve been had some good results and have been on a good run of form.

"It’s a local derby as well so you get that added spice. I thought we were tough today.

"I thought we started really well. We were the better side and took our goal well, and then we took our foot off the pedal for whatever reason.

"When Huddersfield equalised I thought they were in the ascendancy. The second half flattened out a little bit and was quite equal.

"But I think that with people like Billy Sharp on the bench when you want to change it – when you go from one up front to two – then you’ve always got a chance of nicking things."

Moments before Sharp’s winner, Antenucci had blazed over a great chance from inside the area, but Redfearn praised the striker’s character for responding quickly with the crucial assist.

"I said right from the off that I would never criticise people for getting in front of goal," said the head coach.

"If you’re getting people in front of goal, you’re going to score goals.

"He got a great ball in for Billy’s goal did Mirco, and he showed one or two bits of quality that gets you over the line."
