UNDER-21S HAMMER HUDDERSFIELD

Youngsters in 5-0 victory at the John Smith's Stadium...

Monday afternoon saw our Under-21s record a comprehensive 5-0 Yorkshire derby victory over 10-man Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium.

After a fast-paced start to the game, the United youngsters broke the deadlock on 11 minutes as on-loan centre-back Dario Del Fabro rose the highest inside the area to meet Chris Dawson’s corner and power a header beyond the helpless Joe Murphy.

And the lead was soon to be doubled by fellow loanee Brian Montenegro just six minutes later. The Paraguayan forward rounded Murphy after working his way into the area and stabbed into an empty net from close-range to make it 2-0.

Kalvin Phillips and Lewis Walters both tried their luck from range in search of a third, while Huddersfield threatened for the first time on the half-hour mark as Duane Holmes’ free-kick deflected off the wall and against the crossbar, before Eric Grimes was forced into his first save of the afternoon from the resulting corner.

A brief period of Huddersfield pressure followed and the United defence needed to dig in to see the two-goal lead into half-time.

The two sides re-emerged unchanged but United were handed an early boost at the start of the second period as Town’s Sondre Tronstrad was shown a straight red card for handling Del Fabro’s header inside the area.

Dawson stepped up and calmly dispatched the resulting spot-kick, sending Murphy the wrong direction to make it 3-0 after 50 minutes.

Grimes was then forced into action at the opposite end, producing a fine reflex save to push away Regan Booty’s close-range effort, before Phillips smashed a low corner high over Murphy’s bar as United pushed for a fourth.

Luke Parkin and Luke Booker were introduced, replacing Montenegro and Adryan respectively, and the fourth goal was soon added courtesy of a spectacular Phillips strike from distance.

The midfielder was invited to shoot from around 25 yards and his ferocious effort sailed into the bottom corner with Murphy well-beaten.

Booker blazed a volley over the bar and Walters was inches away from a fifth, before Ross Killock did add to the scoreline with a close-range header deep into stoppage-time as the youngsters made it back-to-back victories in comprehensive fashion.

United: Grimes, Coyle, Killock, Del Fabro, Denton, Purver, Phillips, Adryan (Booker 69), Dawson, Walters, Montenegro (Parkin 64). Subs. Atkinson, Coker, Skelton.
