U21S REPORT: UNITED GO FOUR UNBEATEN

Eoghan Stokes nets a double in 2-2 draw at Huddersfield Town...

Eoghan Stokes netted a brace as our Under-21s made it four games unbeaten with a 2-2 Yorkshire derby draw away to Huddersfield Town on Monday afternoon.

Stokes took his tally to four goals from his last three matches as the United youngsters twice came from behind to earn a point at the Terriers’ Canalside Academy base.

The game also saw Gaetano Berardi make his comeback from an ankle injury sustained in December’s 0-0 draw at Charlton Athletic, with the full-back completing 45 minutes as he pushes for a return to the senior squad in time for Tuesday’s Sky Bet Championship visit of Fulham.

Berardi volleyed over the crossbar from distance during the early exchanges, but it was the hosts who managed to open the scoring as Jacob Hanson converted Rekeil Pyke’s 24th-minute cross..

Stokes pulled United level within just 10 minutes, though, netting a powerful half-volley to make it all square going into the break after a competitive first half.

Pyke passed up a good opportunity to restore Town’s advantage shortly after the restart, firing straight at goalkeeper Eric Grimes, but the hosts were soon back in front through Duane Holmes’ deflected effort.

Leeds grabbed an equaliser within a matter of seconds, though, Eoghan Stokes notching his second of the afternoon with another ferocious strike to the right of sprawling goalkeeper Luke Coddington.

Paul Hart’s side then went in pursuit of a winner, with Coddington reacting sharply to deny Tyler Denton, before Huddersfield thought they had snatched it with five minutes remaining as Jordy Hiwula clipped the post after being sent through one-on-one.

Under-21s team vs Huddersfield Town: Grimes, Berardi (Skelton 46), P McKay, Purver, Denton, Phillips, Sloth, Stokes, Parkin (Vouama 85), Mulhern, J McKay (Walters 70). Subs not used: Richardson, Lyman.
