Leeds United Women manager Simon Wood reflected on an important 2-0 victory away at Bradford City Women, with the Whites maintaining the perfect start to the FA Women’s National League Division One North campaign.

Chloe Dixon opened the scoring in the 15th minute, her free-kick taking a deflection on its way in, before Alice Hughes doubled the advantage with 20 minutes remaining, bundling home Brittany Sanderson’s delivery to secure the West Yorkshire derby bragging rights.

Speaking to LUTV after the game, Wood praised the work ethic of his side and the challenge posed by derby day.

"We had to dig in, but I think that we have seen in times where we've played Bradford before, it's a West Yorkshire derby, so we knew it would be a scrappy affair, it would be physical and we'd have to win the battles before we won the game.

"There's a sending off for us in there, but I think the players' response after that was superb. Obviously we had to change our shape a little bit, but that second goal just gave us that little bit of comfort that we knew we could control the game from there.

"You look at the effort levels of the players, they're sprinting, they're working. You've got midfielders jumping out of position to go chase a ball out.

"You've got wingers that are sprinting 50 yards and there's no right to win the ball to stop it going out for the goal kick. I think if you look at how we have played this season, that's the thing that's starting to be the thread throughout our performances.

”The work rate and effort, and the want to put in a performance is really strong at the minute.”

Looking ahead to facing Bradford again in the FA WNL Cup a week later, Wood highlighted the opportunity to give his squad a welcome rotation.

“It gives us the opportunity to make sure we're getting some minutes for players,” the boss explained.

“Next week gives us a bit of a breakaway maybe from that pressure, but what we want to make sure we do, we keep the momentum going with the performance.”
