Leeds United Women continued their winning form at home this afternoon, seeing off Rotherham United Women in an FA Cup First Round clash.
Ava Spencer-Smith opened the scoring in the first half, capping off a lovely team move, before captain Shauna Legge sealed progression to the Second Round as she bundled the ball home with 15 minutes remaining to make it 2-0.
Speaking to LUTV post-match, Simon Wood said: "We knew that they'd be a tough opposition, but it's always tricky when you're going to a game that's got the potential of a giant killing in it, that potential banana skin.
"We knew we had to manage the game in quite a professional way today, and I think we did that."
The boss lauded the importance of Spencer-Smith's opener.
"We were struggling a little bit because we were making a few slower decisions, as the players had a lot of time on the ball," he said.
"That was one in the first half where we played quick, two-touch football and managed to break that line and get in behind them.
"We're aware that last year we got caught in games sometimes where teams would drop deep, so it's something we've looked at this season and talked about when coming up against different challenges. It was pleasing to find a way in like that."
Leeds will welcome Norton & Stockton Ancients to the BD Community Stadium in two weeks' time for the Second Round, with Wood expecting another tough test against familiar opposition.
"We know Norton's going to be a challenge. We know what sort of stubborn, hard-working opponent they'll be.
"We've played them plenty of times, and I think last season we played them four times altogether in all competitions. It's a local one, and we know how good they can be.
"We want to get as far as we can in competitions, but our focus this year is on the league competitions. The FA Cup gives us an opportunity to make sure we can give people minutes that need them as well.
"But it's a game representing Leeds United and, when we get to that, we want to win every game."
