Leeds United Women lifted the Julie Chipchase Trophy after a strong performance in South Yorkshire saw the Whites run out 3-1 victors over Doncaster Rovers Belles.
After dominating the early proceedings, the pressure finally told shortly after the break, when new signing Ellie White fired home from the edge of the area, before Amy Woodruff added a second with just under 20 minutes of time remaining.
The hosts did pull one back to ensure a nervy ending at the Eco-Power Stadium, but Sian Gibrill-Keating’s late goal sealed victory for Leeds.
Speaking after the match, boss Simon Wood was delighted with what he had seen from his team ahead of the new campaign.
“The players did well,” he said. “It was great to see the hard work that they have put into pre-season coming out, and one of the most pleasing aspects was seeing how hard everyone worked out of possession.
“The players have worked hard from the first session to this point and the attitude from all has been top drawer.
“The effort doesn’t stop now though, and we will continue working over the next couple of weeks to be ready for the first game against Huddersfield.
“Ellie’s first goal was a big moment in the game. In the first half she had a half chance which went close, so it was pleasing to see her find the back of the net after the break.
“Amy worked hard all match in her return in a Leeds shirt and she deserved her goal. All the new signings showed why we were keen to bring them in. They have all settled well and complemented the squad from last season.”
The match took place to remember Julie Chipchase, a pioneer of the women’s game who had represented both clubs during her illustrious career.
“Julie had an impact on so many and we were honoured to be asked to play in a game in front of a great crowd,” added Wood.
“Chippy guided Leeds to our first Women’s FA Cup final which is a proud part of our history. The game was a fitting tribute played in the right spirt with two teams wanting to impress.”
