Leeds United Women ran out 5-1 winners in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup first round proper this afternoon, defeating FC St Helens Women thanks to standout substitute performances.

First-half substitute Sian Gibrill-Keating won a penalty, which was dispatched by Kath Smith, and scored late on, and 65th minute addition Brittany Sanderson bagged a brace, her first being her first touch of the ball.

After the victory, Gibrill-Keating said: “It was a really, really good game. I think we were a bit disappointed going in at half time with it only being one nil, because I feel we could have taken more chances.

“It’s always good to get a chance and get some minutes under your legs,” the forward added. “That’s important for a lot of players as well that sit on the bench, so it’s great to come on, get my chance, and I enjoyed it."

On progression in the FA Cup: “I think it’s always important to make sure that you go as far as you can in all these competitions. “It’s good to play in league games and get a good run in cup competitions.

“It’s about building momentum so we can crack on and keep winning our games, that’s what it’s all about.

“We’re feeling confident,” Sian commented on Wednesday’s upcoming clash. “There are things we can work on and there’s positives we can grow into. I think we’re all lookin forward to Wednesday night.”
