Leeds United have been saddened to learn of the passing of former goalkeeper Roy Wood at the age of 92.
Born in Wallasey, Merseyside on 16th October 1930, Wood had stints at New Brighton and Clitheroe, before joining Leeds United in 1952.
He made his debut against Derby County in a 3-1 victory on 24th October 1953 in the Second Division and went on to make a total of 204 outings between the sticks in all competitions during his time at Elland Road.
The shot-stopper was ever present for Leeds during the 1955/56 season, in which the club won promotion to the First Division after finishing as runners-up in the second tier.
He went on to enjoy four more seasons with Leeds in the top-flight, with his final game coming against Newcastle United on 13th February 1960.
Wood returned to Elland Road for the club’s centenary celebrations held in 2019, marking 100 years of Leeds United, whilst also still enjoyed attending games with his family.
The condolences from everyone at Leeds United go out to Roy’s partner Beryl, along with his family and friends at this difficult time.
