Leeds United Women put in a five-star display, as they tore apart local-rivals Barnsley Women at the Global Stadium, with former Reds striker Laura Bartup netting four!

Dan O’Hearne will have been delighted with his side from the outset, as they were straight on the front foot in search of goals. Bartup and Paige Williams were linking well and went closest in the opening moments but there were no goals inside the opening 20 minutes.

The deadlock was broken though when Olivia Smart whipped in a dangerous cross, which Bartup showed she had the true instinct of a striker to get in front of her defender and flick into the back of the net.

Just a few minutes later, the forward was at it again. Williams collected the ball on the right wing and launched a superb ball over the top, which Bartup controlled, then rounded the Barnsley ‘keeper and smashed home.

Seconds after the restart, it was nearly three for Bartup and for Leeds, but Serena Clarke made an excellent save from the close-range header.

In a first 45 they had dominated, O’Hearne saw his side put in an impressive shift and take in a two-goal lead at the interval.

HALF TIME: Leeds United Women 2-0 Barnsley Women

The second half began how the first had finished, with the Whites on the front foot. Jodie Hunter had come forward from her defensive midfield position and struck twice on goal, before former Barnsley captain Kathryn Smith curled a strike onto the crossbar.

With 25 minutes or so remaining, Bartup wasn’t to be denied this time and did indeed get her hat-trick. She raced through one-on-one and showed composure, before slotting low into the back of the net.

Leeds were then completely in the ascendancy wanted to put this Yorkshire derby well and truly to bed.

With 10 minutes remaining, Bartup saved her best strike of the game for her last one! Picked up the ball 25-yards out, she took one touch, and curled a stunner into the top corner to get her and her teams fourth of the match.

There was still time for five though. Coming off the bench, Rebecca Hunt looked to rival her teammates latest effort, by herself also scoring a stunner, hitting a dipping half-volley into the back of the net.

The final whistle went and the pre-match thoughts of O’Hearne had been listened to, as the Leeds manager had called for his side to be more clinical in front of goal, and they certainly had been.
