Daniel Farke’s players secured another three points at Elland Road, to overcome a tough Middlesbrough side. Despite going behind early on, his team hit back with three goals in the first half to make it seven wins on the bounce at Elland Road.
As was the case at home to Swansea City in midweek, there was another quick start, with goals coming at either end and the Whites having to fight back from a goal behind.
Boro took the lead inside just three minutes. Picking up the ball and working his way into a shooting position Emmanuel Latte Lath thundered an effort into the top corner.
Leeds hit back instantly though. Dan James and Georginio Rutter looked to break free and it appeared the chance had gone, with both players having efforts on goal well cleared.
However, Sam Byram on the left-hand-side kept the ball alive and chipped it to the back post where James rose highest against the opposition defence, to send his header into the bottom corner!
Just two minutes later and Farke’s side were ahead in the game. In an almost carbon copy to the leveller, but on the opposite wing, this time Crysencio Summerville leapt highest through the air to power home a header from Archie Gray’s cross into the box!
The action then continued and chances kept coming in what was a thoroughly entertaining opening at Elland Road, with each goalkeeper called into action.
Illan Meslier had to be alert and saved well one-on-one from Latte Lath, before Matt Crooks fired over on the follow up. At the other end, Seny Dieng did well to deny Georginio’s effort from inside the box.
Boro had to make a change in defence in the 36th minute, with Paddy McNair making way due to injury, with Matt Clarke his replacement.
The defender was instantly involved in a way he wouldn’t want to be, as he brought down Georginio within a minute, to give away a penalty! Joel Piroe stepped up confidently from the spot and fired home, to make it three.
Shortly before the whistle for half-time though, the scoring continued. Getting his and Boro’s second, Latte Lath was able to flick home a header into the far corner, from Dan Barlaser’s set-piece.
HALF TIME: Leeds United 3-2 Middlesbrough
Back out for the second half, no further changes had been made on either side, but the chances came early again.
For the visitors, Clarke powered a header over when well placed and at the other end, Dieng made a fingertip save to deny Georginio.
Just after an hour bad been played, the away side were reduced to 10 players. Having already picked up a yellow card in the first half, Anfernee Dijksteel was given a second yellow and sent-off, for a late lunge on James.
Leeds were looking to make the player advantage count and went in search of further goals. Link up play between the front four was causing more danger, with Georginio once again forcing Dieng into a good save with 20 minutes left to play.
It was Boro though who had the next big chance and they came within inches of equalising. Fresh off the bench, Sammy Silvera saw his strike deflected onto the post and the rebound fell kindly for Morgan Rogers, but Joe Rodon threw his body superbly in front of the shot to block it and clear.
Substitutions came on each side to try and influence the game but under the lights of Elland Road, Farke’s side managed to control the end of the match and hold on to a hard-fought three points.
