Leeds came back from 1-0 down to secure a point away at Brentford on Super Sunday, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring his fourth goal in as many games late on at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Daniel Farke made just one change to his starting XI, bringing Ao Tanaka back into the side following his 96th-minute heroics against Liverpool in the 3-3 thriller last weekend.

Leeds’ midfield saw a significant amount of the ball in the opening stages, with Tanaka and Anton Stach combining nicely to find room for Calvert-Lewin breaking into the area on the right. Our number 9 swept the ball across the face of goal, but his pass was easily collected by a Brentford defender.

Lucas Perri made his first stop of the night soon after, getting down low to grasp a drilled cross from Michael Kayode, who was fed into the box following a counterattack as Stach’s corner was cleared away from the head of Pascal Struijk.

Beginning to grow into the game, the hosts started to probe at the Whites’ box. Kayode’s long throws were well defended by United’s backline, and as Dango Outtara sought to break the deadlock after curling from range, Perri was again called into action to comfortably collect.

The best chance of the first half-an-hour fell the way of the visitors, as Noah Okafor, playing a one-two off of a Brentford midfielder, broke in-behind and sprinted at Caoimhin Kelleher’s goal. The winger fired on target from a tight angle, forcing the hosts’ ‘keeper into an assured stop to keep the tie level.

Okafor was again at the centre of another good chance moments later, tricking his way past two defenders before digging out a cross from the byline, which very narrowly evaded a blue shirt and was cleared.

Brentford thought they had been awarded a penalty in the 35th minute, but Outtara, who went down under pressure from Gabi Gudmundsson, was judged to be in an offside position.

The Whites came forward again, and again Okafor came close. Stach’s cross from the left fell to Jayden Bogle on the opposite flank, who whipped the ball to the front post where the Swiss international prodded just wide of the target.

Perri was the next ‘keeper to make a save, standing tall and using a strong hand to prevent Keane Lewis-Potter from opening the scoring after he cut back to open some space.

Okafor then attempted a bicycle kick to break the deadlock, acrobatically clearing the bar with his effort after Calvert-Lewin’s chipped ball was headed back across goal by Tanaka.

John Brooks blew the whistle signalling half time a couple of minutes later after a very promising 45 minutes of football from the Whites, in which the best chances of the clash fell to.

HALF TIME: Brentford 0-0 Leeds United

Leeds picked up where they left off in the first half, coming out firing as Stach again caused problems on the left flank and won a corner, which was cleared and fell to Tanaka, but the Japanese international’s half-volley was wide of the target.

Calvert-Lewin then saw a header comfortably saved, as he flicked on target just inside of the box following a floated pass from the left wing.

As the clock ticked past the 60th minute, Keith Andrews looked to his bench for the first time, introducing Rico Henry and Mikkel Damsgaard to the mix as the hosts sought to tip the tie in their favour.

Ten minutes later, despite continuous pressure from the Whites, Jordan Henderson opened the scoring in West London, converting a pull-back in the centre of the area.

In search of an instant response, Daniel Farke introduced Willy Gnonto and Brenden Aaronson to the mix. Almost instantly after, Okafor made contact from a set-piece and called Kelleher into action again, parrying away to prevent the effort finding the top corner.

The Whites, now fired up and searching for an equaliser, found themselves in a four-on-four counter, which ended in Bogle firing wide after Okafor laid the ball back to Stach, and the German threaded through for the onrushing fullback.

Calvert-Lewin’s hard work eventually paid off, as just after he saw a header narrowly glanced wide, he found the back of the net!

Fresh legs in Willy Gnonto tricked his way into a crossing position, lofting the ball to the far post, where our number 9 rose highest and headed into the net, leaving Kelleher rooted.

Ethan Ampadu almost instantly put the visitors ahead right after, finding room to strike on the edge of the box. The captain’s powerful effort was just wide and clattered the advertising boards behind the goal.

This chance marked the last sight of goal, and with John Brooks blowing the full time whistle, a very valuable point was confirmed to be heading back to Yorkshire!
