Sean Longstaff's 73rd-minute strike sealed the comeback for Leeds United, as they came from behind to defeat Liverpool 4-2 in Chicago.
In their final pre-season clash on US soil, Brenden Aaronson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin's strikes brought proceedings level after going 2-0 down at the break, before Longstaff completed the turnaround and Calvert-Lewin grabbed another with five minutes to play.
After the game, the midfielder said: “On the pitch, I try make the most of it and show what I can do, just trying to enjoy it as much as I can. It seems to be going ok at the minute so hopefully that continues!
“First half still had good bits but obviously probably the key moments went to them. Then the second half, yeah, I think the ones who came on had nothing really to lose, just try to be as positive as possible.
“You can be nothing but happy. We took advantage of some set pieces and ultimately took the chances when they came.
“I think we had chances in the first half, that goalie made a couple of good saves and we put a couple wide, and then in the second half they just seemed to go in.”
Two of United’s four second half goals came from long throws delivered captain Ethan Ampadu. When asked about the importance of set pieces within football, Longstaff believes they are crucial in getting results, at both ends of the pitch.
“I think last year it was a massive part of a game, and, yeah, it seems to be getting harder and harder to score from open play in the Premier League.
“So, I think for every team they will be a massive sort of chance to score a goal and we are no different. We took advantage of it really well last year, and something we want to improve upon again going into this season.”
With the tour of the US now concluded, Leeds welcome Bundesliga side RB Leipzig to West Yorkshire next weekend – a test which the midfielder is excited for.
“It will be a really tough game,” he added. “Obviously, a really good side and to go home and play at Elland Road is really exciting.
“We have been away for a long time now so I think everyone is looking forward to getting home and we can’t wait to see all the fans back at the stadium.”
