Leeds United Women head to Hull City Ladies on Sunday in the FA Women’s National League Cup First Round, after topping Group U.

The Whites’ 5-2 victory over York City away from home secured the top spot in the group stage, finishing on seven points with victory also over Halifax, and a draw away at Norton & Stockton Ancients.

Leeds have emerged victorious in the Plate division of this competition previously, lifting silverware in the 2022/23 season after defeating Stourbridge 3-1 in the final.

Ahead of the game, midfielder Monique Watson said: “Hull aren’t ones to be taken lightly – they’re strong, they’re physical, and they’ve got some very, good technically gifted players.

“We want to go into it the same way, with the same attitude, and the same application that we went into Huddersfield. The aim at the end of the day is to win the game.

“We’ve got to be fully focussed to be able to get anything out of the game, and that links on to the cup run, where we’d love to have a good run and get quite far in the competition.

“It’s about momentum,” Watson added on the results the Whites have been stringing together. “It's important that we build momentum, so whether we're going to play the top teams or teams at the bottom the outcome is still the same.

“It's about building momentum and kind of getting a good run of results behind us because it gives us confidence.”

On the challenge of upper-tier opposition: “Being challenged with higher opposition is exactly what we need at the minute. Huddersfield were a very good side so we've had a challenge last weekend, so to go into a different challenge will be really interesting and it’s one that the girls are embracing.

“Ultimately, we want to win. So it's about that mentality, regardless of which game it is, whether it's a WSL side or a Tier Seven side.”
