Leeds United will start their participation in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, as they welcome Shrewsbury Town to Elland Road for a first round clash.

In 2012, at the same stage of the cup here in Leeds, Wednesday’s upcoming visitors suffered a 4-0 defeat, that one taking place on August 11th.

Before we cast our minds back to that tie, Ben Scott re-visits some of the clubs historic and memorable early-stage games in this competition on home soil.

It was here in LS11 OES that Leeds first competed in this competition, a scoreless draw with Blackpool in September 1960. The replay seven days later at Bloomfield Road saw Leeds win 3-1, a certain Don Revie getting one of the goals!

The following season at the same stage saw Leeds overcome Brentford 4-1 on 13 September, hero of the night was the busy forward John McCole as he bagged all four goals – the Glasgow born forward a constant threat for The Bees.

Fast forward six years later and it was another Scottish forward grabbing the goals, again on the 13 September in second round. Peter Lorimer scored a hat-trick, defeating Luton Town 3-1. Leeds would go and win every tie in the cup that season, a record which saw them overcome Arsenal in the final, winning it one 1-0.

Closer to the present day and a first round clash with Lincoln City caused no issues as the Whites ran out 4-0 winners. A goal came after a couple of minutes when Leeds born Johnny Howson headed home a far post header after a cross from Sanchez Watt. Five minutes later things began looking impossible for The Imps as Luciano Becchio drilled home a low left-footed six yard shot. Leeds added a third with Sam heading neatly home at close range. A Neil Kilkenny penalty completed the socring, drilling low into the goal after Paul Green had taken Watt down.

In our featured match, the 2012/13 season opened up for Leeds at home against Shrewsbury, the tie on Saturday 11 August, attracting an attendance of 18,194.

In the opening five minutes of the match Ross McCormack was keeping The Shrews busy. By the quarter hour mark he had dug out two shots, but both went the wrong side of the goal frame.

Five minutes later though and perseverance paid off as Rudolph Austin set up Becchio, and he hit a low left-footed shot central in the area from around six-yards out. Austin then shot himself a minute later, but couldn’t get the goal.

On 26 minutes McCormack set up Luke Varney for a debut goal when he volleyed in a close-range right-footed volley.

The fixture was 11 minutes into the second half before the next dangerous play unfolded. As ever, it was Leeds with the chance when David Norris struck. Sam Byram did the same moment later, neither though drew a goal.

After he was denied previously, Norris notched a debut goal with a curling right-footed shot from distance, assisted by earlier scorer, Varney.

The game was into its last quarter when McCormack scored a penalty, drilling it low and accurate after Michael Hector had handled the ball.

Despite Leeds’ second tier status they would reach the quarter-final of the competition this season in the 2012/13 season.
