After being awarded the 2019 FIFA Fair Play Award, Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa issued the following:

In the game Leeds vs Aston Villa of season 18/19 we scored a goal when the opponent expected us to interrupt the game.

Immediately afterwards, as the game resumed, we solved the situation, offering no resistance to our rival and allowing them to equalise and tie the match.

The International Federation of Associated Football has decided to recognise our behaviour.

Naturally, I would like to thank, share and dedicate the distinction received.

To start with, I want to thank FIFA.

Also to Leeds United and its fans who did not question my actions. They could have claimed that I had to respect the ruling of the official, but instead, they accepted my particular interpretation of differentiating something that is legal from something that is fair

The physical trainer of the team Benoit Delaval and Captain Liam Cooper were present at Monday’s  event. The first significantly influenced my decision and the second represents the players who had the extremely uncomfortable task of following my instructions.

When choosing how to act, the most difficult thing is not to distinguish between right or wrong, but to accept the consequences of doing what corresponds. While there are immediate effects, the important thing is to consider how we will feel when time passes and we review our behaviour.

When, as in this case, there was no time to reflect and we had to intervene instantly, our reflexes are conditioned by education, examples, references.

I want to mention my mother who always knew what was right and what was wrong.

Also to Newell’s Old Boys of Rosario, a club to which I belong, where -for twenty years- I learned to live football in a particular way.

There are permanent presences in my life, such as my wife, my sister and some friends who remind me of values that should not be forgotten.

Football, due to its enormous impact, at times operates on some aspects of public morals, and it is especially involved in the moulding the lives of those who have less, or are the weakest.

It is not convenient to comment on realities that we imagine but do not live. However, I think that most of those who have less still choose to do the right thing. With great effort they remain worthy and retain decency.

The recognition that FIFA gives us includes them, because it rewards the same behaviour that they anonymously live every day.

En el partido Leeds vs Aston Villa de la Temporada 18/19 logramos un gol cuando el rival esperaba que interrumpiéramos el juego.

Inmediatamente después, resolvimos la situación, facilitando el tanto del empate que fue convertido sin que nos opusiéramos.

La Federación Internacional de Futbol Asociado ha decidido reconocer el comportamiento que tuvimos en aquella oportunidad.

Como es natural deseo agradecer, compartir y dedicar la distinción recibida.

Inicialmente dar las gracias a la FIFA.

También a Leeds United y a sus aficionados que no cuestionaron mi accionar. Podrían haberme reclamado que me adaptara a la decisión arbitral, sin embargo aceptaron mi criterio de diferenciar legal de legitimo.

Están presentes en este acto el Preparador Físico del equipo Benoit Delaval y el Capitán Liam Cooper. El primero influyo significativamente en mi decisión y el segundo representa a los futbolistas que tuvieron la incomoda tarea de concretar lo que propuse.

Al elegir como actuar, lo mas difícil no es distinguir entre lo correcto o incorrecto, sino asumir las consecuencias de hacer lo que corresponde. Si bien hay efectos cercanos, lo importante es considerar como vamos a sentirnos cuando pase el tiempo y revisemos nuestro comportamiento.

Cuando, como en este caso, no hay tiempo para reflexionar y debemos intervenir instantáneamente, nuestros reflejos están condicionados por la educación, los ejemplos, las referencias.

Quiero nombrar a mi Mama que siempre sabia lo que estaba bien y lo que estaba mal. También a Newell’s Old Boys de Rosario, club al que pertenezco, en el cual durante veinte años aprendí a vivir el futbol de una manera.

Hay presencias permanentes como la de mi esposa, mi hermana y algunos amigos que me recuerdan los valores que no deben olvidarse.

El futbol, por su enorme repercusión, en ocasiones opera sobre algunos aspectos de la moral publica. Especialmente interviene en la formación de los que menos tienen, de los mas débiles.

No es conveniente opinar sobre realidades que imaginamos pero no vivimos.  Sin embargo pienso que la mayoría de los que reciben poco, aun así eligen  hacer lo correcto. Con gran esfuerzo se mantienen dignos y conservan la decencia.

El reconocimiento que hoy la FIFA nos concede los incluye, porque  premia la misma conducta que ellos anónimamente tienen cada día.
