Gabriel Gudmundsson played the full 90 minutes as Sweden booked their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Poland in the UEFA play-off final.
Operating at left wing-back, the 26-year-old Leeds United man delivered a disciplined performance at the Strawberry Arena in Solna, as his side secured their first appearance at a World Cup since 2018.
Sweden made a bright start and took the lead after 20 minutes through Anthony Elanga, before Poland responded on 33 minutes when Nicola Zalewski found the net to level proceedings.
Just before the break, Gustaf Lagerbielke restored Sweden’s advantage with a goal in the 44th minute, sending the hosts into half-time ahead.
Poland again fought back, equalising on 55 minutes through Karol Świderski to set up a tense second half in Solna.
With the match seemingly heading for extra time, Sweden struck late as Viktor Gyökeres netted in the 88th minute to spark celebrations among the home supporters and seal qualification.
Gudmundsson contributed solidly on both sides of the ball, recording 34 touches and completing eight passes, while also making one tackle and two recoveries. He won four duels during an assured display.
The Leeds United defender has now featured in every game of Sweden’s qualifying campaign, including the semi-final victory over Ukraine on Thursday, underlining his importance to the national side.
Sweden’s return to the World Cup marks a significant milestone, with Gudmundsson playing a key role throughout the journey to qualification.
