Gudmundsson helps Sweden make winning World Cup start

Gabriel Gudmundsson Sweden June 26 Arrival

Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson played his part as Sweden opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Tunisia in Mexico.

The 27-year-old featured for 65 minutes at Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, Nuevo León, helping Sweden secure all three points in their opening Group F fixture.

Born in Malmö, Gudmundsson produced an assured defensive display before being replaced shortly after the hour mark by Elliott Stroud.

During his time on the pitch, the Whites full-back recorded 44 touches and completed 19 passes, while also impressing defensively. Gudmundsson won seven duels, made five clearances, four recoveries, two tackles and one interception as Sweden controlled proceedings on their way to a convincing win.

There was a moment of concern when Gudmundsson left the field, with fears he may have picked up an injury. However, Sweden head coach Graham Potter quickly eased any worries after the match.

"It was cramp," Potter confirmed.

The result sees Sweden move to the top of Group F after Japan and the Netherlands played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the section's other fixture.

Attention now turns to a crucial clash with the Netherlands, with Sweden looking to strengthen their position at the summit of the group.

Gudmundsson and his team-mates return to action on Saturday evening, when they face the Dutch at Houston Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6pm BST.
