Emirates FA Cup Preview: Leeds United vs Norwich City

Whites face Canaries at Elland Road.

Elland Road FA Cup

A place in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final is at stake for Leeds United on Sunday afternoon, as they do battle with Norwich City in the Fifth Round of the competition.

The Whites advanced to the Round of 16 after a penalty shootout victory over Birmingham City in the West Midlands in February.

Daniel Farke’s side were leading courtesy of a Lukas Nmecha strike before a late equaliser sent the tie to spot-kicks where Leeds had goalkeeper Lucas Perri to thank for producing a fine save to help his team progress.

Prior to that, this year’s cup campaign got underway with a 3-1 win at Derby County. On that January afternoon, Wilfried Gnonto, Ao Tanaka and James Justin were on target.

The cup tie comes after the Whites fell to defeat on home soil against Sunderland where, despite dominating at Elland Road, United were unable to break the deadlock and a second-half penalty separated the two teams.

Having famously won the competition in its centenary year of 1972, a win would bring a first quarter-final clash for Leeds since the 2002/03 season.

The Canaries, meanwhile advanced to the Fifth Round after previously beating Walsall and West Bromwich Albion. Having never reached the final of the FA Cup, Norwich have instead made the last four on three occasions and most recently reached the quarter-final in 2020.

On Sky Bet Championship duties, the Norfolk outfit have found form under boss Philippe Clement, who has steered the team away from the drop zone and sit 12 points adrift of the Play-Offs.

Daniel Farke came up against his former employers twice in the Whites’ promotion winning campaign last term. Away from home, Leeds were held to a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.

Back in West Yorkshire, on the most recent Elland Road meeting between the two, goals from Manor Solomon and Daniel James either side of the break ensured the hosts returned to the top of the table in January 2025.

In the FA Cup, there have been six meetings between the two beginning with a first clash 91 years ago. Most recently, in 1977, the Whites progressed courtesy of a 5-2 home victory with Allan Clarke scoring as he captained the side.

Action from Elland Road gets underway at 4:30pm.
