Brenden Aaronson played a key role in the United States’ 2-1 victory over Paraguay, delivering one of his strongest national team displays as he earned his 55th senior cap.
The Leeds United forward started on the right of a fluid USMNT attack and featured for 80 minutes before being replaced by Vancouver Whitecaps’ Sebastian Berhalter. Aaronson was heavily involved throughout, registering 46 touches and completing 19 accurate passes, several of which helped the hosts progress through Paraguay’s compact shape.
Out of possession, the 25-year-old’s work rate and reading of the game stood out. He contributed two defensive actions, two interceptions and three recoveries, while also winning six duels in a combative midfield contest.
Despite being a friendly, tempers flared late on. In the 90th minute, a melee on the touchline saw Sunderland defender Omar Alderete - an unused substitute - shown a straight red card for violent conduct, adding a dramatic edge to the closing stages.
Aaronson’s performance drew praise from US media outlets. ESPN handed him a 7/10, noting that he “connected well with the midfield and provided some line-breaking passes.” NBC matched the rating and suggested it was among his best outings in a USMNT shirt, saying “he was sharp” and “the energy and smarts were there.”
The win keeps the USA’s momentum building ahead of their next test - a high-profile meeting with Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay on Tuesday night.
