Amy Woodruff: We are really excited to get back out there

Forward looks ahead to Chorley clash.

Leeds United Women return to league action on Sunday, two weeks after their previous match against Barnsley, which saw Simon Wood’s side take the bragging rights in an impressive 2-0 derby day victory.

On the scoresheet that day was striker Amy Woodruff, netting early against her former club to put the Whites into the lead in Garforth.

United added to their tally through Alice Hughes, recording their fourth straight win in the FA WNL Division One North to maintain their strong start to the new campaign.

Ahead of this weekend’s visit to Chorley, Woodruff believes the team are well equipped to continue their good form, despite the stop-start nature of the last few weeks.

“A good win against Barnsley, we got out and did what we needed to do,” the forward explained. “We had the game plan and we stuck with it.

“It was nice to not concede as well. That is something that maybe we have not done very well this season.

“We have got confidence going into Chorley. We have had two good weeks in training again with no game so we are really excited to get back out there.

“It has been frustrating to not play because you build such a good momentum up and then all of a sudden you have got a weekend off again. Then it is like getting back into training for no game again.

“We have just got to keep our motivation high because obviously winning on a Sunday keeps your focus for the week after. We have got to maintain that focus from two weeks ago against Barnsley.”

Carmelo Ruggieri’s Chorley side are also battling it out towards the top of the tale, having won six of their nine league matches so far.

“They are very organised,” added Woodruff, warning of the threats the opposition will pose. “They have got players that have got so much experience in different leagues, different tiers, so I think they will know what they are doing.

“They will be very hard to break down, they don’t concede many, and obviously they are second in the league for a reason.

“They are going to be a tough opposition in a tough place to travel away, but we have got to stick to our game plan and that is how we have been getting results.”
