Development Squad in five goal rout…

The Development Squad’s final home game of the season proved to be a real goal-fest as Neil Redfearn's side recorded their biggest win of the campaign, beating Nottingham Forest 5-2.

Luke Parkin scored twice as United wrapped up a home campaign that has seen just one defeat in nine games.

Parkin got United on the way early in the match when he latched onto a Kalvin Phillips through ball. The young forward kept his cool and slotted the ball under the Forest keeper.

Frank Mulhern, who was in the side with Lewis Walters suffering from injury, hit the crossbar just moments later as United dominated the early stages.

But the away side levelled the contest on 36 minutes when United’s defence failed to clear a corner.

Forest came close to going ahead before the break on two occasions. They hit the side netting after Eric Grimes failed to collect a cross, but then the keeper redeemed himself by making a great save to deny the away side.

United went in front again in the first minute of the second half when Parkin got his second of the game. The striker controlled a cross brilliantly, before turning and striking for goal.

Moments later Chris Dawson came close to putting United further ahead but his looping effort was cleared off the line with the keeper beaten.

The midfielder played his part in United’s third when his shot was saved, only for Phillips to smash home the rebound on 67 minutes.

United made it four on 70 minutes when central defender Affy Coker showed his finishing skills by placing a first time shot into the bottom corner from a cross.

Just a minute later the away side pulled one back, but the game was finished off when Dawson got United’s fifth and final goal of the game in the 88th minute.

Dawson picked up the ball just inside the away half and drove at the defence. The midfielder weaved his way past three defenders before slotting home.

United: Grimes, Bookers, Coker, Bryan (Skelton), Coyle, Lenighan, Thompson (Purver), Phillips, Dawson, Mulhern (Cook), Parkin.
