CARDIFF: STAT PACK

CARDIFF: STAT PACK

Andrew Dalton provides the stats ahead of our South Wales trip...

It's back on the road for Neil Redfearn’s side this weekend and they aim to end one of their worst runs by winning at Cardiff for the first time since the 1983/84 season. Cardiff have moved up to 11th in the league following Russell Slade’s appointment which has seen the Welsh side win two of his first three games in charge.

United's last five trips to Cardiff:

September 15th 2012 - Cardiff City 2-1 Leeds United, Championship

April 21st 2012 - Cardiff City 1-1 Leeds United, Championship

January 4th 2011 - Cardiff City 2-1 Leeds United, Championship

February 17th 2007 - Cardiff City 1-0 Leeds United, Championship

August 9th 2005 - Cardiff City 2-1 Leeds United, Championship

Five who played for both:

Robbie Fowler – Fowler joined Leeds from Liverpool in November 2001 for £11m and was seen as the final piece in the jigsaw. Despite scoring 14 goals in 33 games, he was sold to Manchester City in January 2003. He then moved back to Liverpool before a free transfer to Cardiff in July 2007, scoring six goals in 16 games for the Welsh side.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink – Jimmy came to Leeds in the summer of 1997 from Boavista and became a cult hero at Elland Road, scoring 42 goals in 87 games before joining Atletico Madrid. He returned to the Premiership with spells at Chelsea, Middlesbrough and Charlton before finishing his career at Ninian Park. Whilst in Wales he contributed nine goals in 44 games.

Nathan Blake – The Cardiff-born player joined his home city club from Chelsea in 1990 and was a hero at Ninian Park, scoring 40 goals for the side including a memorable winner against Manchester City in the FA Cup in 1994. He then joined Sheffield United, before spells at Bolton, Blackburn, Wolves and Leicester soon followed. His career at Elland Road was short-lived, though, making only three appearances on loan from Leicester. He did however manage to hit the back of the net in a 2-1 win at Coventry in January 2005.

Simon Walton – Walton burst on the scene as a 16-year-old teenager in the pre-season games of 2004. He made his debut at home to Derby live on Sky. He made 38 appearances at Elland Road, scoring three goals before a move to Charlton Athletic. From there he had loan spells at Ipswich and Cardiff where he made six appearances and even managed at red card against Leeds in February 2007!

Tony Capaldi – The Northern Irish international joined Cardiff from Plymouth in May 2007. He went on to make 77 appearances for the Bluebirds. The full-back joined Leeds on loan for brief spell in November 2009 and made five appearances for the Whites. He was unused sub for the January 3rd win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Five stats:

United haven’t claimed three points at Cardiff since a George McCluskey winner on February 11th 1984.

In United's last three visits to Ninian Park, Cardiff were awarded a penalty on each occasion. In October 2004, Andy Campbell had his spot kick saved, whilst Darren Purse scored his the following season. The following season Casper Ankergren saved Stephen Thompson's penalty.

In three consecutive seasons in the 1950s, United were knocked out by the Bluebirds in the third round of the FA Cup all by the same scoreline. In January 1956, Cardiff won 2-1 at Elland Road and produced the exact same result the following two seasons.

Fast forward to 2002, and the side from South Wales did it in the FA Cup. This time Leeds were top of the Premiership and Cardiff were a Second Division side. Despite taking the lead through Mark Viduka, goals from Graham Kavanagh and Scott Young settled the tie. Leeds also had Alan Smith sent off.

The last players to be sent off in this fixture in South Wales were both in the same fixture. Simon Walton and Michael Chopra saw red for Cardiff in the Whites 1-0 defeat at Ninian Park in February 2007.
