FANTASTIC START FOR JACK

Jack Butland on his United debut…

Man of the Match Jack Butland was delighted to make his debut at Middlesbrough last weekend - and is looking forward to his time with the club.

The England international made a number of terrific saves to secure a cleansheet at the Riverside on his United debut, and the team's solid performance delighted the highly rated youngster.

“I’m really happy to get the debut out of the way and I’m really pleased to have kept a cleansheet,” said Jack. “It is a fantastic start and hopefully now we can kick on and pick up some more points.

“I’ve always been vocal and so are the lads in front of me. That is what you need and they were brilliant on Saturday. I’d only trained once and all the lads have been extremely welcoming and the fans as well.

"They have all made me feel part of it and I’m really pleased to have started with a solid performance from everyone.

“The pressure was on. It is not always going to be pretty and it was fight on Saturday. We dug in and all you can ask for away from home is keeping a cleansheet and taking something from the game, no matter where you go.”

Last week’s new arrival went straight into the starting line-up with Paddy Kenny sidelined due to injury and the keeper says a top six finish is the main aim.

Jack admits he "jumped at the chance" when interest from United arose and says the squad have made him feel welcome.

“The expectation and the fanbase behind the club is huge,” said the keeper. “They certainly want a Play-Off spot and everyone in the team wants it as well.

“That is the target we are aiming for. That is certainly in everyone’s mind and that is everyone’s main focus.

“The move has only come around in the last few days. It has been a quick turnaround but I jumped at the opportunity to come to Leeds.

“I know a few of the lads which is helpful. They have all been incredibly welcoming and have made me feel at home. They are all easy to get on with.

“That is always a massive part of coming to a new club and I’m thankful that the dressing room is good.”

With the World Cup in Brazil just a few months away and the goalkeeper is hoping impressive performances for United could be the key to being included in Roy Hodgson’s England squad.

“Playing for England is the dream,” added Butland. “And going to a World Cup is obviously a dream as well.

“That is certainly a target of mine. I know that I can’t go and won’t go unless I’m playing and playing well.

“This is a great opportunity and hopefully I’ll keep playing and putting in the performances. If I do then there is a chance.

“I can only focus on each game as it comes and hopefully I can do well.”
