United defender Sol Bamba has been named in the Sky Bet Football League Team of the Week after an impressive debut in Saturday’s Yorkshire derby win at Huddersfield.

Bamba, a January loan signing from Palermo, slotted straight into Neil Redfearn’s side at the John Smith’s Stadium to replace the suspended Giuseppe Bellusci in defence.

Billy Sharp’s late header secured the three points and the local bragging rights, but it is Bamba who takes the Football League’s plaudits after what they described as “a commanding display”.

The 30-year-old centre-back partnered Liam Cooper at the heart of defence and made more interceptions (seven) and clearances (13) than any other player on the pitch, as well as earning praise from Neil Redfearn.

The head coach said: "I think Bamba made a difference, he gives that physical presence and he’s got that bit of pace and experience."
