AUSTIN LEADS JAMAICA TO FINAL

A round-up of our players on international duty over the weekend...

United midfielder Rodolph Austin captained Jamaica to back-to-back wins as they reached the Caribbean Cup final over the weekend.

Austin was among the goalscorers in Friday's 3-0 win over Antigua and Barbuda, before helping them to a 2-0 win over Haiti on Sunday.

He completed the full 90 minutes at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Friday, playing a key role in helping the Reggae Boyz collect their first three points of the tournament.

The 29-year-old’s low free-kick teed up Kemar Lawrence to open the scoring inside the first half, before getting on the scoresheet himself with a header five minutes from time.

Sunday then saw him lead the side beyond Haiti to book a place in Tuesday's final with Trinidad and Tobago as he assisted Darren Mattocks for the second goal. The midfielder was then substituted four minutes from time.

Elsewhere, there was also joy for young striker Eoghan Stokes, who continued his rich vein of form with another two goals for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-19s.

Stokes, who scored the winner against Malta last Thursday, netted twice in Saturday’s 4-1 European Championship qualifying win over Gibraltar to help Ireland reach the tournament’s Elite Phase.

The 18-year-old grabbed his first from close-range on 32 minutes before an impressive second-half strike from 25 yards out made it four.

He was then substituted ahead of Tuesday’s final qualifying group game over Switzerland, with top spot in Group Six up for grabs.

The 18-year-old Academy product now has five goals from his last five games for his country. He Tweeted after the game: "Buzzing to qualify for the next phase! Happy to get two goals as well, now just to look forward to Tuesday to see if we can top the group."

Meanwhile, young goalkeeper Eric Grimes was an unused substitute as the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21s side fell to a 1-0 defeat against USA in Marbella on Saturday afternoon.

Grimes, who was drafted into the squad last week, could feature for his country on Monday though, as a friendly against Russia is next up for Noel King's side (kick-off 5pm).

Finally, 18-year-old Academy scholar Munya Mbanje made his debut for Zimbabwe’s Under-23s as a late substitute during Sunday night’s 2-1 defeat to Morocco.
