ANNIVERSARY WIN NEEDED

Boss hoping to mark first year with a win...

Brian McDermott is hoping for a repeat showing at Elland Road on Saturday to mark his one-year anniversary as Leeds United manager.

Twelve months ago, the former Reading boss was appointed as Neil Warnock’s successor and he announced his arrival by presiding over a first win in eight games to all-but secure our Championship status for another season.

The team had gone into that game against Sheffield Wednesday last April on the back of a four-game losing streak, and they have lost five in a row this time around, ahead of the visit of Blackpool (3.07pm).

United are currently on 47 points, eight points clear of third bottom Millwall, with five games still to play, and 11 clear of Barnsley, who have a game in hand, but have a far inferior goal dfference.

“You can only guess as to what points will be safe,” said the boss. “All I know is that we have to win, and one win will do it.

“It’s not just about that, though, it's about playing as well as we can and getting towards the summer.

“You can't look back, we have to learn from the games and look forward. Words do seem to be hollow at the moment. We all need to step up.

“We’re looking for strong characters. Everyone has to stand up. We have five games to go and we have to finish as strong as possible.”
