Lewis Walters netted a second-half penalty as our Under-21s were 2-1 winners away to Crewe Alexandra on Wednesday afternoon.
Walters, who was among the first-team substitutes against Watford on Saturday, was part of an entirely homegrown starting line-up which included defender Ross Killock as part of his youth loan arrangement while at Halifax Town. Chris Dawson also returned to the side after a short injury lay-off.
The hosts opened the scoring from the penalty spot after just eight minutes and took their slender 1-0 lead into half-time, but Irish striker Eoghan Stokes levelled proceedings within a minute of the restart.
And 19-year-old Walters, another player on the comeback trail from injury, dispatched his spot-kick as the youngsters ended a run of four competitive games without victory in 2015.
United team: Grimes, Coyle, Killock, Skelton, Denton, Purver, Phillips, Parkin, Dawson, Walters, Stokes. Subs. Atkinson, Booker, Coker, McDaid, Pearce.
