AIDY: IT'S BEEN AN HONOUR

Academy product thanks the fans for their support...

Aidy White has issued a thank you message to the United supporters, saying it has been "an honour and a privilege" to represent his hometown club for the last seven years.

The 23-year-old, a Thorp Arch graduate, was one of nine professionals told earlier this week that they would be free to leave the club this summer.

After joining the Academy in 2002 and rapidly progressing through the ranks, the versatile left-footer made his debut at the age of just 16 in 2008’s League Cup tie with Crystal Palace.

He then featured 15 times in the promotion-winning campaign of 2009/10, winning the Young Player of the Year award along the way, before heading out on loan to Oldham Athletic gain regular football the following season.

Aidy returned to Elland Road in summer 2011 and went on to enjoy his most productive season in a white shirt, establishing himself as a regular fixture in the side with 39 appearances in all competitions. Despite previously being capped for England Under-19s, this season also saw him gain international recognition with the Republic of Ireland Under-21s.

The 2012/13 campaign brought Aidy’s first United goal, a dazzling solo effort in the League Cup victory over Everton, and he added to his tally in the Yorkshire derby defeat to Huddersfield.

The following season, however, proved to be a frustrating one and Aidy joined Sheffield United for a brief loan spell after being limited to just three appearances at Elland Road.

Aidy forced his way back into the first-team picture last summer and looked set to play a key role in the side, but a season-ruining injury picked up in the friendly at Chesterfield consigned him to the sidelines and his only appearance in 2014/15 came on the final day against Rotherham United.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to play for my home club for so many years. It’s something I am extremely proud of,” he said.

“I have many fantastic memories at the club and I have made many friends over the years with players, staff and fans alike.

“I would like to thank all the fans for their support throughout my career at Leeds.

“It has been a frustrating season being out for the duration but it was fantastic to play a part in the last game, especially with such a welcoming home crowd.

“I wish this great club every success for the future and look forward to it being back where it belongs.

“I am excited for the new challenges ahead and the start of a new chapter.”
