Vertu Trophy Preview: Accrington Stanley vs Leeds United U21s

Whites finish Group Stage campaign.

Accrington Stanley Wham Stadium

Leeds United Under-21s round off their Vertu Trophy Group G campaign on Tuesday evening, looking for a positive ending to what has been an important learning experience for the youthful team.

Despite falling to defeats at the hands of experienced Port Vale and Fleetwood Town outfits, the young Whites can still finish third in the standings with a win at the Wham Stadium.

Scott Gardner’s side go into the encounter keen to get back to winning ways after falling to a narrow defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest U21s over the weekend.

Harry Gray was on target for United but they were unable to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League 2 to four matches, having previously faced Brighton & Hove Albion, West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City.

Stanley, meanwhile, began their Vertu Trophy fixtures with a 2-0 defeat on home soil against Port Vale before earning their only point with a draw – and subsequent penalty shootout loss – on the coast at Fleetwood.

The Reds have history in the competition, reaching the semi-finals of the 2023 edition before losing out to eventual champions Bolton Wanderers.

John Doolan’s side have struggled for form at the start of the Sky Bet League Two season though they did pick up a point on Saturday afternoon, coming from behind to earn a 3-3 draw at promotion contenders Chesterfield.

Action from the Wham Stadium gets underway at 7:45pm.
