The Leeds United Foundation's Ups and Downs Café takes place on Wednesday afternoons at Elland Road, providing a welcoming and supportive space for supporters to come together, connect, and share their experiences.
One session in particular was made extra special by a surprise visit from former Leeds United player and manager Simon Grayson. Simon spent time with the group discussing his journey from apprentice to first-team player and then manager, offering honest and engaging reflections on his career in the game.
He shared memorable stories from his time at Leeds United, including the famous FA Cup victory against Manchester United and promotion to the Championship, moments that clearly resonated with those in attendance.
The open discussion allowed supporters to ask questions, reminisce, and hear first-hand accounts of key moments in the club’s history from someone who lived them. The session highlighted the power of shared memories and the strong bond between players, managers, and supporters.
The Ups and Downs Café is funded by the Premier League Players Fund and gives attendees the opportunity to visit Elland Road each week in a relaxed and friendly environment. The sessions support mental wellbeing by reducing isolation, encouraging conversation, and creating meaningful social connections.
One of the key benefits of the group is the chance to share stories with people who have lived those experiences together, whether as players, managers, or lifelong supporters. Bringing together supporters, players, and managers in this way strengthens community ties and reinforces the positive impact football can have beyond the pitch.
