The Unlocking Potential programme recently hosted it’s second special coaching event at Leeds Beckett University in celebration of International Women’s Day.
More than 100 girls from Rothwell St Mary’s Primary, Hunslet Moor Primary, and Sharp Lane Primary took part in the event, reinforcing the programme’s commitment to expanding sporting opportunities for young girls across the city.
The session featured a variety of activities, including circuits and mini-tournaments, designed to encourage participation and skill development. Alongside the coaching, attendees received commemorative branded t-shirts to celebrate the event.
Unlocking Potential was launched in 2024 by the NFL Foundation UK, San Francisco 49ers and the Leeds United Foundation, and reached its year one target of 1,000 beneficiaries, with the initiative currently on track to reach its year two target of 2,000 beneficiaries.
The programme aims to provide greater access to educational and sporting pathways for marginalised young people in Leeds across a three-year period, with beneficiaries receiving training and equipment, alongside a variety of educational workshops, plus NFL themed events and flag football programmes all hosted at Elland Road. The ambition is to reach 3,000 participants by the end of year three.
International Women's Day is celebrated every year in March and is dedicated to those who care about gender equality and want to celebrate women's achievements. The event also raises crucial awareness around discrimination that still takes place today as well as promoting inclusivity and opportunities for females, like the Unlocking Potential session hosted.
