Andy Taylor’s Leeds United Under-23s side are facing off against rivals Manchester United Under-23s on Tuesday evening (7pm), under the lights of Elland Road.
The Whites return to action on home turf in Premier League 2 Division One having not played a home game since early February, where 8,656 fans were inside Elland Road to see an excellent 3-0 victory over Liverpool.
This will be Taylor’s first league match in charge of the Whites after he recently took over from Mark Jackson, who was appointed to the first team coaching staff. Three points would be key in front of what is expect to be another big crowd.
Visitors Manchester United come into the match under the leadership of Neil Wood, sitting 5th in the league standings. Three wins from their last four league matches has seen the Reds challenging at the top end of the division, with a top two finish still within their grasp.
Young forward Shola Shoretire will need to be watched closely on Tuesday. The 18-year-old is the top scorer for Manchester United’s U23s this season and has also seen first team action for his side. Sam Greenwood is now the outright leader for the Whites after scoring last time out against Spurs, meaning he moves one ahead of Joe Gelhardt in the charts.
As the season heads ever closer to its conclusion, the battle down the bottom half of the league is becoming intense. Including this clash, Leeds have six games remaining to try and put distance between themselves and the bottom two.
Currently 11th in the table, the Whites are level on points with 12th placed Blackburn Rovers after they drew 2-2 away at Arsenal on Monday night. That now means both teams are two points clear of 13th placed Chelsea - who have a game in hand - and five points clear of Derby County who are bottom.
Leeds will meet Chelsea this coming weekend in what will be another important game - to be played at Stamford Bridge - but first up it’s full focus on Manchester United at Elland Road, in front of what is expected to be another excellent atmosphere.
