Leeds United Under-21s returned to Premier League 2 action on Friday evening, taking on a strong Crystal Palace Under-21s team who ran out comfortable winners, at the LNER Community Stadium.

The Whites came into the match having played out an entertaining 2-2 draw against Liverpool last time out, whereas visitors Palace convincingly beat West Bromwich Albion on home turf.

Michael Skubala’s side had the first chance of the game, in what had been a relatively slow opening. However when it came it was almost spectacular, as Mateo Joseph struck from 25-yards and forced Joe Whitworth to tip over the bar

With their first real effort on goal of the game, the Eagles took the lead. Leeds failed to deal with a corner into the box and at the near post, Jack Wells-Morrison was able to poke the ball home to open the scoring.

A set-play would undo the Whites for a second time, with Palace extending their advance. A dangerous ball into the box went through a melee of bodies and found its way into the back of the net.

Despite Leeds seeing plenty of the ball and pushing forward, they couldn’t create many openings on goal to find a way back into the game.

Two minutes before the break, the Eagles would add a third. Joe Sheridan’s header came back out off the post and ricocheted kindly for Wells-Morrison, who was well positioned to head him his second of the game and a third for his team to take into the dressing room.

HALF TIME: Leeds United 0-3 Crystal Palace

After a tough opening 45 minutes, Skubala went to his bench and made a triple change at the break. Sean McGurk, Keenan Carole and Jeremiah Mullen all entered the action whilst Palace remained unchanged.

From another set-play, the away side would get another early in the second half. Much like the third goal, the initial effort was stopped, before a rebound fell for Ademola Ola-Adebomi to head home the fourth.

The Palace number nine would then get his second and a fifth for his side just two minutes later. Another cross into the box found Ola-Adebomi in space to power home a header into the far corner.

Continuing to try and fight to get on the scoresheet, Joseph, Darko Gyabi and Connor Ferguson all went close but were denied by Whitworth, or couldn’t hit the target.

In the final minute of normal time, Palace scored a sixth. Off the bench in the second half, Justin Devenny picked up a loose ball in the box and found the bottom corner.

Straight down the other end, also off the bench, Joe Snowdon did pull one back for Leeds with a well-timed finish in stoppage time, before Palace found the net again through Devenny scoring his second.

A difficult evening was then brought to a close with the visitors claiming all three points. The Whites will next be in action at home to Chelsea on Sunday 12th November, at the LNER Community Stadium in York.
