Leeds United Under-21s return to Premier League 2 action on Monday evening with a trip to Wearside to face Sunderland.
Focus is back to PL2 duties after attention turned to the National League Cup during the week, which saw Scott Gardner’s side record a superb comeback victory to beat Aldershot Town and advance to the semi-finals of the competition.
A brace from skipper on the night Rhys Chadwick, and an emphatic volley from midfielder Oliver Pickles, ensured the Whites overturned a half-time deficit to run out winners in Hampshire.
That victory continued a rich vein of form for United, who are unbeaten in six in all competitions heading into the clash in the North East.
Wins in that time have come against Birmingham City, Derby County, Norwich City and over the Shots last time out.
Before the weekend’s fixtures, Leeds sit 16th in the congested PL2 standings – level on points with Sunderland – and, other results depending, can move into the top 10 should they win this tie and their game in hand.
After back-to-back victories over Leicester City and Wolves, the Black Cats have struggled for form, losing two of their previous three in the PL2.
Last time out, Graeme Murty’s side fell to a 2-1 defeat away against West Bromwich Albion despite Trey Ogunsuyi’s second-half goal in the Midlands.
Action from the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground gets underway at 7pm.
