U21s Preview: Leeds United vs Aston Villa

Whites back in PL2 action.

LNER Community Stadium 2

Leeds United Under-21s are back in Premier League 2 action on Friday, as they welcome Aston Villa Under-21s to the LNER Community Stadium.

Scott Gardner’s side will be looking to continue their unbeaten start to the new campaign when they face the Midlands outfit, after drawing their season opener against Stoke City.

Luca Thomas’ second-half penalty had put the Whites on track to return from the bet365 Stadium with all three points last weekend, before Nathan Lowe’s late header salvaged a point for the hosts.

Villa, meanwhile, kicked off their campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Derby County on home soil, thanks to a brace from Ben Broggio and Rico Richards’ strike before the full-time whistle.

Just seven points separated the sides in last season’s league standings, with no fixtures being played between the two.

Despite not meeting across the previous campaign, the teams are no strangers to one another, having met three times during 2022/23, with the Whites winning 2-1 on all occasions.

A Sonny Perkins brace kickstarted things in a victory at the Bodymoor Heath Training Ground, with Brenden Aaronson and Sean McGurk on the scoresheet in the return fixture.

In what would end in Play-Off glory for the Whites that season, goals from Mateo Joseph and Perkins once more saw United edge past Villa, this time in the semi-final success at Elland Road.

Action from the LNER Community Stadium gets underway at 7pm.
