Sunderland vs Leeds United: Team news, key stats and everything you need to know

Previewing our trip to the Stadium of Light.

Stadium of Light Sunderland

Leeds United will be looking to get back to winning ways on Sunday afternoon as they face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Elland Road was a cauldron of noise last time out as we entertained rivals Manchester United at the weekend. After falling behind to a Bryan Mbeumo finish, Daniel Farke’s side duly responded through Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s emphatic strike.

The Whites went close to winning it too with Anton Stach seeing a late chance cleared off the line, but the opposition’s defence frustratingly stood firm until the full-time whistle sounded.

Prior to that clash in West Yorkshire, the Whites returned from the recent international break and faced reigning Premier League champions Arsenal in the capital.

James Justin fired United into the lead with a powerful finish but despite an impressive showing from Farke’s team, the hosts turned it around to snatch all three points.

The draw against Manchester United kept Leeds in seventh in the standings, having taken 10 points from the opening seven fixtures – six more than bottom-placed Sunderland who have struggled for form after a fine first season back in the top-flight last term.

While the Black Cats have found results hard to come by domestically, winning just once to date, Régis Le Bris’ side recorded two victories in the UEFA Europa League before drawing with Lech Poznań during the week.

On Wearside back in late 2025, Calvert-Lewin was again on target, netting from a low Brenden Aaronson delivery to finish off a fine team move and score in a sixth consecutive Premier League fixture.

Over the years against the Mackems, Leeds marginally edge the wins tally with 41 victories and 36 defeats. Our most recent success at the Stadium of Light in the top-flight came back in 2002 when 16-year-old James Milner became the youngest ever Premier League goal scorer.

Action on Wearside gets underway at 4:30pm.

The view from inside the camp:

Speaking to the media, Gabriel Gudmundsson said: “Sunderland at home is always difficult to deal with, we know that, so we need to be strong. It is going to be a challenge. Also, we want to have revenge from last time we were there. I think we were the better team so we should have won that game. We want to go there and definitely get something out of it because that will be massive for us.” Read more here.
