Leeds United Women bowed out the FA Cup this afternoon, after falling to defeat against a strong third tier West Brom side 3-0.
Despite the result, Simon Wood and his side can take plenty of positives out of the tie. After the match, the Whites' boss spoke to LUTV about his side’s performance.
“First half, I thought we defended really, really well, and we had a couple of opportunities on the counterattack where we thought we could build on that in the second half.
“We had a bit of a reaction once we went behind, and we had to open up, and we had to become a little bit more offensive in how we play, because it's a cup game, and we needed to try and find a result after the 90 minutes.
“But credit to West Brom, we knew there'd be a tough challenge after playing them earlier in the season, in the League Cup, so we knew they'd come with lots of threats, and I think they've progressed rightly to the next round, because they've found a way of scoring against us.
“We've played a few tier three teams this year. We've played Halifax, we played Hull, we played West Brom twice, and I think the players, over the course of those games have done tremendously well.
“We've got a good group of players. We've got players that want to play as high as they can. And I think what we saw today was that we don't look sort of in the wrong company when we're playing against these sides.
“What we've got to do now is refocus. We've got to look at, we're halfway through our league campaign, nearly, and we've started it really well.
“We've progressed in the FA Cup, where we haven't progressed in the last few seasons, but at some point, that was always going to come to an end. So, we regroup now and we refocus on what comes next after the new year.
“We want to get back into league action. We want to keep playing one game at a time and looking where we can get results, because we've had a good start to the season.
“We've got to make sure that the experiences we've had today against the tier three side, we put to good use, and where we feel we haven't quite progressed where we wanted to today, we take the learning from that, we build into the week of training.
“We know the hard work will have to continue after Christmas, and we know to get where our aspirations to be, to be as competitive and do as well as we can in the league season.”
